Nepean implements the Middle Years Literacy Program across the secondary department. The program is modified to specifically provide for the diverse range of students' abilities. Literacy is an essential part and inherent facet of teaching and learning within all Key Learning Areas. Our comprehensive curriculum and the students' Individual Program Plans ensure that individual needs are met, unique learning styles are catered for and students are challenged as they work towards their full potential.
Teachers work collaboratively with speech pathologists and occupational therapists to design, implement and develop literacy objectives for each student. Various teaching and learning approaches are employed such as sensory, language experience, guided reading and reciprocal teaching classes, real life practice and other academic tasks. Augmentative and Alternative Communication strategies, in conjunction with Information and Communication Technologies are also used to foster students' engagement with and access to literacy.
Our Middle Years program provides students with the opportunity to experience success, develop functional literacy skills ad prepare them for positive and purposeful experiences they can take beyond school and into their adult lives.
