At Nepean we offer a multi-sensory approach to learning, incorporating principles of sensory stimulation, integration and processing.

Our approach acknowledges that we all learn through our senses - touch, movement, smell, taste, hearing and vision. With sensory stimulation and processing the senses are awakened enabling students to be actively involved in their learning and to make sense of the world around them. Students' individual sensory needs are identified through assessments and observations and a range of sensory experiences and activities are carefully planned. Our school is well resourced to support students sensory needs, with a wide range of switch adapted toys and games, swings and rockers, UV areas, massage mats, tactile toys and mats and of course our beautiful Discovery Room.

Our collaborative teams (teachers, speech pathologists, occupational therapists, physiotherapists and music therapist) design sensory programs that aim to develop students engagement, understanding of cause and effect, communication skills, awareness of the environment and the opportunity to make choices and be actively involved.
