Our speech pathologists work in partnership with multidisciplinary staff, using an educational model to deliver class based programs and to provide assessment and management of students.
Diagnosing and managing students' communication and meal time skills is a priority. Speech pathologists are able to provide advice and assistance for students with speech and language disorders, hearing impairments, fluency, voice disorders, social skills, saliva control eating and swallowing difficulties.
The use of augmentative and alternative communication systems is a highlight of the speech pathologists work at Nepean. Our staff work together to highlight students ability to communicate through the use of communication books, electronic communication devices and signing. Students are supported in this through the Nepean School Communication Device Library - a well developed library of communication devices ranging from single switches (BIGmack) through to multi cell devices (CheapTalk) multi level devices (MACAW) and dynamic display devices (Dynamite). Students are able to trial a device at home and school according to their specific needs. Once the most appropriate device has been determined, the speech pathologists are able to assist with funding applications to obtain a personal device for student use.
